De Rerum Natura is a respected French yarn company founded in 2012 by Solenn Couix-Loarer and headquartered in Toulouse, France. Solenn created the brand with a vision: to offer traceable, ethically sourced yarns from sheep raised in species-appropriate conditions in Europe, especially avoiding mulesing and favouring small traditional farms.
All unbleached wool in their yarns comes from Merinos d’Arles sheep raised on organic farms in Provence. This wool averages just 21.5 microns and is considered some of the finest available in Europe. Yarn is spun semi-woollen in France—with some finishing in Italy and Belgium—to combine loft and softness while maintaining a lightly rustic character.
Signature yarns include:
Gilliatt (worsted weight): a blend of white Merinos d’Arles and black Portuguese Merino (Merino Petra), offering elasticity, yardage and soft structure.
Ulysse (sport weight): similar blend to Gilliatt but lighter, perfect for drapey garments and accessories.
Cyrano (aran/heavy aran): woollen spun blend of Arles and Portuguese Merino offering bounce and stitch definition.
Albertine (fingering weight): 90% Merinos d’Arles and 10% silk for luxurious softness, elasticity and sheen.
Pénélope (DK): 90% Merinos d’Arles with 10% silk, soft and drapey for refined garments.
Bérénice (lace weight): blend of South African super-kid mohair, silk and Merinos d’Arles for airy, soft luxury.
Candide (sport weight): 70% organic Merinos d’Arles and 30% recycled cotton, spun and dyed in France using plant-based dyes for breathable, eco-friendly yarns.
Alice (light fingering): 75% organic Merinos d’Arles and 25% linen from northern France and Belgium, comb-spun in Italy for elasticity, lightness and a luminous hand.
All dyeing and spinning processes are carried out in France (and some in Italy for Alice) using GOTS-compliant or natural dyes to minimize environmental impact. Fibre sourcing, spinning and dyeing are conducted within short supply chains, with a strong focus on transparency and local collaboration.
At Beehive Wool Shop we value De Rerum Natura for their unwavering commitment to ethical fibre sourcing, European craftsmanship and sustainable production. Their yarns resonate with knitters and crocheters across Canada and the USA who appreciate traceability, ecological values and beautifully textured, heirloom-quality materials.
