Knitting Level 2: Mittens

Welcome back! If you've conquered the basics covered in our Knitting Level 1 class, you are ready for Level 2. In this class you will learn the skills needed to make mittens.

The pattern is provided for this class, but students are required to purchase their own yarn, needles, and notions. Students get a 15% discount on materials purchased for their class.

Supplies to Purchase

  • 100 g of worsted-weight yarn in light or bright colours. Suggested:
    • Berroco Lanas, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Berroco Vintage, Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, Drops Karisma, Drops Lima, Estelle Wave, Istex Léttlopi, Malabrigo Rios
  • 3.75 mm (US 5) and 4.5 mm (US 7), 80 cm (32”) circular knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Smooth waste yarn or 1 small stitch holder.

Lesson Plan

Class 1

  • Long Tail cast on
  • Intro to magic loop
  • Swatch
  • Cast on for ribbing
  • Homework: Finish the ribbing, knit until just before increases

Class 2

  • Recap on pattern reading/common abbreviations
  • Learn increases
  • Place thumb stitches on hold, backwards loop cast on
  • Homework: Knit until time to start the decreases

Class 3

  • Learn decreases
  • Homework: Finish knitting the mitt hand, weave yarn tail through top stitches to bind off

Class 4

  • Pick up stitches for thumb
  • Knit the thumb 
  • Weave in tails 
  • Start second mitten
