Knitting Level 3: Top-Down Socks

In this class, you will be making a pair of socks from the top down on double pointed needles. 

The pattern is provided for this class, but students are required to purchase their own yarn, needles, and notions. Students get a 15% discount on materials purchased for their class.

Supplies to Purchase

  • 350 m of sport-DK weight yarn in light or bright colours. Suggested:
    • Berroco Vintage Baby, Berroco Vintage DK, Katia Miska, Sirdar Snuggly DK
  • 3.25 mm (US 3) DPNs
  • 1 locking stitch marker
  • Measuring tape
  • Tapestry needle

Lesson Plan

Class 1

  • Learn the anatomy of a sock
  • Intro to DPNs
  • Old Norwegian/German Twisted cast on
  • Knit the ribbing & shank
  • Homework: Finish leg up to the heel flap

Class 2

  • Knit heel flap
  • Turn heel with short rows

Class 3

  • Pick up stitches for gusset
  • Knit gusset
  • Homework: Work foot until ready to graft

Class 4

  • Kitchener stitch and weave in tails
  • Start second sock
