Knitting Level 4: Two-Handed Fair Isle
In this class you will be introduced to Fair Isle knitting (two-colour stranded colourwork). The instructor will cover basic techniques and support you in working through a simple colourwork project, such as a hat or cowl.
We recommend Sacred Peaks Cowl by Mountain and Mesa (available on Ravelry); however, staff are happy to assist with pattern choice.
Length: 4 sessions x 1.5 hours
Your chosen pattern must be:
- Knit in the round
- Limited to 2 colours per row
- A project that doesn’t offer technical challenges apart from the colourwork (for example, if you are comfortable making hats but not mittens, choose a hat project)
You will learn how to:
- Knit with both hands (left-handed knitters learn to use their right, and vice versa)
- Understand colour dominance
- Carry floats
- Follow a chart
You should know how to:
- Maintain even tension
- Cast on and bind off
- Knit and purl
- Read a pattern
- Work in the round
You need to bring:
- 2 colours of practice yarn and appropriate needles (we recommend choosing something in a similar gauge to your project)
Choose your own pattern:
- Your chosen pattern and the required materials. See above for pattern requirements
Sacred Peaks Cowl:
- 4.5 mm (US 7), 60 cm (24”) circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge in colourwork- typically larger than needle for stockinette stitch)
- Tapestry Needle
- Stitch Markers
